Oil permit: Waste cooking oil to be treated only by legal means

Taiwan recently has been suffering from the food safety issue. To strengthen monitoring of waste cooking oil suppliers and collectors, the Yunlin County Government has conducted comprehensive investigations of the entities that failed to meet requirements in the re-inspection last year, as well as the businesses in the catering industry, starting from January 1, 2015. Businesses of smaller scale must have their waste oil collected by licensed collectors, and contracts have to be signed in advance. This is to prevent waste oil from being collected by unscrupulous vendors and posing a threat to the health of the public.

The Environmental Protection Bureau has issued 108 permits to 22 oil collectors countywide, among which 18 are at level B and 4 are at level C in terms of their oil treatment technology. The Bureau will continue to assist related collectors in applying for the necessary permit.

Businesses in the catering industry, including food stalls, are urged to receive oil only from licensed entities in order to ensure food safety. In addition, if oil suppliers possess waste oil treated by unlicensed collectors, they may be fined a penalty of NTD 6,000 to 30,000; unlicensed individual collectors will receive a penalty of NTD 60,000 to 300,000 if found guilty of collecting waste oil, and may face other legal liabilities in serious cases.
