Stricter measures for fluoride pollution

Since 2011, public disputes have arisen from fiberglass plants’ pollution affecting crops in Yunlin County. Considering the potential hazard of fluoride over the long term, the Environmental Protection Bureau (EPB) has set a higher standard for Yunlin County’s total fluoride emission amount based on the fluoride concentration regularly tested over the past three years, as well as the more advanced control technology, hoping to reduce the total emission amount by the stricter measures, thereby ensuring crop quality and the health of both people and livestock. The EPB held a public hearing on May 20th on the drafting of the regulations governing Yunlin County’s total fluoride discharge amount. In consideration of fluoride being an accumulative pollutant and the feasibility of control technology, the maximum discharge limit would be narrowed from the current 10mg/Nm3 to 2mg/Nm3, a standard even stricter than that of the US and Japan.
