Lowering PM2.5 with electric vehicles, pioneered by the Magistrate

In response to the overly high concentration of PM2.5, the Magistrate of Yunlin County proposed four directions and ten strategies for substantial reduction; the action plans are also being implemented. Yunlin’s mobile source emissions comprise about one third of the County’s total. Mobile source pollutants are closely related to people’s daily life, so urgent enforcement calls for auto, scooter and diesel vehicle emission control.

Magistrate Lee Chin-Yung visited the Siluo Fruit and Vegetable Market for a promotion event at 10:30 on May 12th to encourage vendors there to replace their highly polluting diesel-powered pallet trucks and 2-stroke scooters with low-pollution and noiseless electric ones. The Environmental Protection Bureau randomly inspected 2-stroke scooters beside the truck scale; those not meeting the requirements were fined and asked to make improvements within a specified time. In addition, the County’s electric scooter purchase subsidy program was promoted. With the program, the vendors were encouraged to replace their diesel-powered pallet trucks or modify them into electric ones, in order to maintain the air quality of the market.
