No Plastics Children’s Carnival at Xiluo Kung Fu Ecology Park: New experience for river watch together

The Yunlin Environmental Protection Bureau on 11 May 2024 held the river (embankment) clean-up called “No Plastics Children’s Forest Carnival” at the Xiluo Kung Fu Ecology Park. In response to the co-governance platform of eight counties and cities in central Taiwan, and to combine the power of the industry, government, and academia, Yunlin Environmental Protection Bureau specifically invited the Changhua Environmental Protection Bureau, businesses, water environment watches, and citizens to the event so as to keep the surroundings of the Zhuoshui River clean. On the event day, a total of 25.35kg of garbage, 303 cigarette butts, and 16.9kg of recyclable resources were cleaned.

At the event marketplace, the environmental education facilities of the county, Yunlin River Watch, ESG businesses, and the Civil Service Ethics Office of Yunlin Environmental Protection Bureau were invited to promote environmental education through interactive quizzes, DIY activities, and games to construct correct environmental protection concepts and correct non-corruption knowledge in participants, and to inspire the environmental awareness and sensibility of citizens. Yunlin Environmental Protection Bureau also introduced the no-plastic marketplace in response to theme “Planet vs. Plastics” of Earth Day 2024 to encourage citizens to prepare their own reusable tableware to support plastics reduction. As Mother’s Day was also drawing near, citizens were invited to the carnation DIY workshop to make heartfelt carnations for their mothers. At the event, certificates of appreciation were also presented to Feng Tay Enterprise Co., Ltd., Chin Hsin Environ Engineering Co., Ltd., Minima Inc., Formosa Plastic Group, and Shwoba Ltd. for their ESG contributions to protect and serve Earth and the Environment.

According to Yunlin Magistrate Li-Shan Chang, the Zhuoshui River is the mother river of Yunlin and flows across many counties and cities in central Taiwan. Magistrate Li-Shan Chang expressed special thanks for the participation of the Changhua Environmental Protection Bureau and businesses. As climate change has become a global issue of high concern, we must not understate water environment protection and governance issues and should protect the water environment together. With this event, Yunlin Environmental Protection Bureau has established a partnership among the public sector (government agencies), the third sector (community residents), and the private sector (private businesses). Apart from extending the low-emission lifestyle action year of 2023, Yunlin Environmental Protection Bureau also aimed at the “international friendship year of 2024” through connecting with the world.

According to Yunlin Environmental Protection Bureau Director Qiao-Wei Zhang, biodiversity at the Zhuoshui River covers birds, fish, and plants. Apart from protecting the local natural ecosystems with integrated management and protection measures, Yunlin Environmental Protection Bureau also urges citizens not to dump garbage in the river and on the river banks, and to practice well source reduction and garbage sorting in daily life so as to safeguard the water environment of Yunlin County and keep moving towards a net-zero sustainable green lifestyle.
