Yunlin County’s 2016 Go Taiwan, Read Malaysia Event
In June of this year, the Yunlin Storyteller Association took up an invitation from Malaysia’s BaiDuRen Art Generation Studio and Petaling Jaya City Hall to visit the country to engage in a cultural exchange. The event resulted in both countries’ sharing their culture, art, and natural environments with each other to form a closer bond between the countries. After all, stories are a great way of bringing people’s past, present, and future closer together.
Telling stories is a lot like giving a gift. For this reason, the “Go Taiwan, Read Malaysia!” program takes the stories and culture of Yunlin to Malaysia for an event which is free of national borders. The event proves that by sharing stories from Yunlin and Taiwan, Taiwanese culture can be presented to the international community as part of the gift economy. This simple act can result in the world becoming a more beautiful and peaceful place for all who live here.
Following on from the event in June, the Yunlin Storyteller Association then invited our Malaysian friends to visit Taiwan from October 1st to October 12th and share with us the many facets of Malaysian culture. This includes the sharing of stories of Malaysian weddings, culinary delights, art exhibitions, recollections of trips around the country, as well as looking at local Malaysian perspectives. The activities which are organized will make possible further international cultural exchange.
The main reason for the Malaysian representatives to visit Taiwan is to come and learn about Yunlin’s storytelling culture, how Taiwan is protecting its natural environment, and the experiences of towns and cities when developing their tourism industries. The representatives will also make a special visit to Taipei’s Dream Community, which uses art to engage in community development, with the BaiDuRen Art Generation Studio participating in the carnival organized by the community in mid-October. This run of events will help to ensure a greater recognition of all aspects of Taiwan among Malaysian people.
On October 1st, members of the public are welcome to the Yunlin Storyteller Association for the lifting of the curtain on their “Malaysia Month” series of events. Guests can also witness the soft power that cultural storytelling activities in Yunlin can exert. This feast of international culture on display allows everyone attending to learn more about Malaysian culture, with the event being an unmissable cultural experience for all.
