Yunlin County EPB consolidating the concepts of soil and groundwater conservation!
The issues of soil and groundwater have begun receiving more attention, along with the soil and groundwater conservation work near the No. 6 Naphtha Cracking Plant Industrial Zone of Mailiao Township. In order to help children from nearby elementary schools gain a greater understanding of the importance of soil and groundwater conservation and the functions of the groundwater monitoring wells in their schools, on October 17, 2013, Yunlin County Environmental Protection Bureau (hereinafter EPB) held a soil and groundwater conservation promotional meeting at the auditorium of Mailiao Elementary School in Yunlin.
Yunlin County EPB stated that the promotional course was primarily focused on fifth and sixth grade Mailiao Elementary School students near the No. 6 Naphtha Cracking Plant Industrial Zone. More than 200 teachers and students participated in the course, with the themes of “Soil and groundwater pollution”, “Adventures of the soil remediation robot” and “Observing the groundwater monitoring wells in the school.” It is hoped that introducing the concepts of pollution of soil and groundwater, the screening of interesting animations and on-site experiential learning can enhance everyone’s understanding of preventing soil and groundwater pollution.
On the day of the event, during class the students responded enthusiastically and diligently learned about conservation. The class used a trivia game method to encourage students to understand and think about the importance of soil and groundwater as well as the serious effects of soil and groundwater pollution on human society and health. As a result, students can begin learning in their youth about conservation, thereby laying the groundwork for environmental protection and allowing the understanding of groundwater conservation to take root. In this event, the children not only learned about environmental conservation in nature, but also won many prizes from the trivia event.
This soil and groundwater conservation promotional meeting was successfully concluded with a lively trivia game. It not only strengthened the concepts of pollution prevention in elementary school students near the No. 6 Naphtha Cracking Plant, but also gave them further understanding about their surrounding environment. EPB will continue to engage in the promotion of pollution prevention, in the hope that the concept of “prevention over control” can start when people are young; these small vanguards of environmental conservation can transmit the concept of soil and groundwater conservation to their family members, so that the public can pay more attention to the protection of soil and groundwater.
