2020 Yunlin County’s World Oceans Day

Conserve the Marine Environment of Yunlin - Everyone is Invited for a Sea Clean-up

In conjunction with World Oceans Day on June 8, and to raise the public’s awareness of the marine environment, the mayor of Yunlin county, Chang, Li-Shan led a group of 150 people in organizing the “2020 Yunlin County World Oceans Day” at San-Tiau-Luen Seaside Resort this morning (7th). The participants were made up of representatives of various bureaus and divisions, members of city/town offices, river patrol groups, environmental protection volunteers, fishermen, and community residents. The core principle of this year’s Oceans Day event was “Zero Garbage in the Sea Helps Fish to Thrive”. On the scene, Mayor Chang led the attending public in which a pledge was made: “show our love to the ocean and say goodbye to garbage”. The Yunlin Environmental Fleet and local organizations were also called upon to remove garbage floating on the water and washed up on the beach, demonstrating the determination of Yunlin to protect the ocean.

In order to apply the “Clean Environment 5S Campaign”, the Yunlin county government has created a “Clean 5S Dance” to encourage the public in maintaining the environment and hygiene at home. A good healthy lifestyle can be formed through the implementation of these 5 Steps: tidying, sorting, cleaning, sweeping, and good-manners. Through this campaign, it is hoped that more people will come together to promote the concept of environmental protection and that more people will try their best to make an effort on the development of environmental sustainability. For our future generations to enjoy the beautiful natural environment of Yunlin, we must reduce waste and recycle at the source.

According to Mayor Chang, Li-Shan, the most basic approach to improving the marine environment is to cut waste from the source and hopefully residents of the county will respond to the campaign and limit, or even eliminate, the use of plastic totally while cutting waste at the source and properly disposing of garbage. Fishermen and those who go finishing are also encouraged to recycle their garbage, particularly highly toxic waste such as batteries which must be properly collected and recycled. Not only is litter in the ocean harmful to the ecological environment, it also threatens our own health, and everyone must try and make an effort for our planet, allowing a safe and healthy living environment for the sea creatures.

The Director of the Environmental Protection Bureau, Zheng, Yu-Lin also urges the public that by exercising 3 principles, the ocean can be protected in our daily lives to further preserve our beautiful coast: 1) Do not use disposable plastic products (e.g. plastic straws, plastic bags). 2) Do not litter and make sure you recycle. 3) Take part in environmental protection events such as beach clean-ups.
